Bubble is a visual platform for building web and mobile apps with its own database. Its manual is explicit that "Bubble apps can only be run on the Bubble platform; there's no way of exporting your application as code"1.

Best for: Founders building a customer-facing web or mobile product who want a mature visual editor and are comfortable staying on one platform.

Not the right fit for: Anyone whose reason for leaving Base44 is lock-in: Bubble apps run only on Bubble.

What Bubble offers teams leaving Base44

Bubble's strengths are maturity and control over data. Privacy rules are set on each data type and enforced on Bubble's servers, so data that a user is not allowed to see is never sent to the browser; Bubble's manual treats them as essential for any private or sensitive data2. The paid plans add a live website, a custom domain, mobile build submissions and version control, with more editors and branches on Growth and Team3.

On ownership, Bubble's position is similar to Base44's and in one respect stricter. Customers own their data and their app's design, user data can be exported as CSV or through the Bubble API, and Bubble commits to releasing its source code under an open-source licence if it ever discontinues the service. The app itself cannot be exported as code, and leaving means rebuilding its logic elsewhere1.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Privacy rules are enforced on Bubble’s servers, so protected records never reach the browser.
  • One platform covers web apps and native mobile builds.
  • Bubble commits to releasing its source code under an open-source licence if it ever discontinues the service.

Limits

  • Apps cannot be exported as code; leaving means rebuilding the logic elsewhere.
  • The free plan is development-only and cannot go live.
  • Workload units rise with traffic and usage, so the bill grows as the app succeeds.

Choose another option if: Owning the code is a requirement. Lovable, Bolt or Dyad give you the repository.

Pricing

Published: on annual billing, Starter is $32, Growth $119 and Team $349 a month. Enterprise is quoted.

Questions to answer before choosing Bubble

  • Is staying on one platform acceptable for the life of this app?
  • How many workload units will the app use at expected traffic, and what happens above the plan's allowance?
  • Who will design and maintain the privacy rules for each data type?
  • Will the app need native mobile builds, and on which plan?

The full comparison sets Bubble against the other eight builders on the same seven criteria.
