Softr as a Base44 alternative: business apps on your own data
A no-code builder for portals, CRMs and internal tools that leaves the records where they already live. Strong on permissions, deliberately light on custom code.

Softr builds business apps from a prompt and generates "the pages, database, permissions and workflows" together1. For a Base44 team whose app is mostly records and logins, it offers a way to keep that shape without maintaining code.
Best for: Client portals, internal tools and lightweight CRMs with logins and permissions, built by operators on data the company already keeps in Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot or a SQL database.
Not the right fit for: Custom product logic, native mobile apps, or teams that want AI to carry out the work rather than display it.
What Softr does for teams leaving Base44
An app can run on Softr's own database or connect to an existing source: Airtable, Notion, Google Sheets, HubSpot, monday.com, Supabase, MySQL, PostgreSQL or any REST API1. That matters for a migration. Records exported from Base44 as CSV can be loaded into a database the company already controls, with Softr as the interface on top, so a later move would mean rebuilding screens rather than moving data again.
Access is part of the generated app. Softr describes server-side rules enforced automatically, user groups and permissions over what each person sees and does, sign-in by email, magic link, Google or SSO, and states SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance1. On the published plans, Pro includes 3 custom user groups and Business 10, while SSO, SCIM, audit logs and Snowflake or BigQuery as sources are Enterprise features2.
Published evidence
- Minerva Network (vendor-reported). Softr reports that Minerva Network cut its administrative workload by 70% and raised athlete registrations by 50% with a Softr app. Vendor-reported; we did not review a full case study.1
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Permissions are generated with the app and enforced by server-side rules, which addresses the most common weakness of prompt-built apps.
- Data can stay where it already lives, which makes leaving Softr later a matter of rebuilding screens rather than moving records.
- Built for operators: changes are made in a visual editor, with no code to maintain.
- User and builder counts per plan are published, so the bill is knowable in advance.
Limits
- Hosted by Softr; there is no self-hosted edition on the pages reviewed.
- Business covers 30 team users and 100 client users; beyond that, each extra user is charged up to a fixed ceiling.
- SSO, SCIM and audit logs are Enterprise features, as are Snowflake and BigQuery as data sources.
- Base-plan AI credits reset monthly and do not roll over.
Choose another option if: You need the code itself, or AI that acts on records with approvals. Lovable gives you the code; OpenLazarus covers the second.
Pricing
Published: on annual billing, Basic is $19, Pro $99 and Business $329 a month; month to month they are $25, $119 and $395. Enterprise is custom.
Questions to ask Softr
- Which data source should hold the records we export from Base44, and who owns that account?
- How many staff and client logins will the app need a year from now, and what plan does that imply?
- Which of our Base44 backend functions can become Softr workflows, and which need another tool?
- Do we need SSO or audit logs, and therefore Enterprise?
The full comparison sets Softr against the other eight builders on the same seven criteria.
